循環器学会では、私たちの研究室からいくつかの賞を頂きました。
その内の一つが、国際留学生のＹＩＡでMariana Kiomy Osakaさんの発表です。
彼女が、ブラジルからの留学生で日系3世です。
大変優秀な女性研究者です。
タイトルは、Estrogen Decreases the Activation of RANK-RANKL System in Vascular Calcificationです。
エストロゲンが、骨そしょう症だけでなく、血管の石灰化を抑えるという内容です。
女性の動脈硬化を考える上で、大変意義深い内容だと思っています。
彼女の説明を以下に書きますね。
”Aortic calcification is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and elevated coronary calcium level is related to increased mortality.
Osteoporosis also has profound effects on health outcomes, and epidemiological studies shows that osteoporosis incidence is highly related to vascular calcification, especially in postmenopausal women.
In this presentation, I am going to show how RANKL signaling, which is already reported to regulate bone metabolism, is also a positive regulater of calcification in aorta.
RANKL is responsible to activate pro-calcification proteins, such as BMP-2, and decrease the expression of the calcification inhibitor MGP in vascular cells.
Moreover, it directly induced the vascular cells to acquire bone phenotype.
Results obtained from cell culture and animal model experiments showed that estrogen is a modulator of RANKL signaling in bone and artery, and that estrogen replacement therapy might has benefits for both osteoporosis and vascular calcification.
