顔面の神経痛

　人はけっこう無造作に言葉を使うことがあります。お互い「相手がファジーに言葉を使うぞ」とわかっていたら、おおむねそれでも用が足りるのですが、ときに困ったことが生じることもあります。誤解や伝言ゲームの発生です。
　医学の世界では（というか、専門用語を駆使する世界ではどこでも）「一つの言葉は一つの意味だけ」が原則となっていますが、問題は複合語。たとえば「顔面神経痛」。これって、たぶん普通の人には「普通の言葉」にしか見えないでしょう。ところが医者はこの言葉を「顔面神経（そういう名前の脳神経があるのです）の痛み」と解釈しようとします。ところが「顔面神経」は基本的に表情筋の運動神経で（まるで副業みたいに、味覚とか涙の分泌もしていますが）顔面の麻痺や痙攣を引きおこすことはあっても「痛みの原因」になることはありません。（ついでですが「顔面の神経」で「痛みの原因」となるのは「三叉神経」です。三叉神経痛は、激烈に痛い）　つまり医者から見たら「顔面神経・痛」というものは存在しません。
　ところが「顔面の神経痛でしょ。だったら“顔面神経痛”だね」ということで、この言葉はどんどん使われてしまいます。つまり、医者が「その言葉の使い方だったら、“「顔面神経」の痛み”になっちゃうよ」と言おうとしても、世間ではあっさり「顔面の神経の痛み」と“翻訳”されてしまう。私が普段使う国語辞典にも「顔面神経痛」がちゃんと載っています。さすがに語の説明は「三叉神経痛の俗称」となっていたので安心しましたが。
　もうこうなったら、「顔面神経麻痺」と「顔面神経痛」と、両方を「日本語」としては認めても良いんじゃないか、なんてことまで私は思ってしまいます。内科医としてはそれほど困らないものですから。しかし、トリッキーな言葉尻が大好きな一部の弁護士や裁判官は「医者が三叉神経痛なんて変な言葉を使うから患者は理解できなかった。これを顔面神経痛と説明していたらちゃんと理解できていた。医者の負け」なんて主張しそうで、こわいこわい。
