バランス

　「古事記」には、黄泉の国から逃げ帰った伊弉諾尊（イザナギ）に対して伊弉冉尊（イザナミ）が「私はこれから毎日、一日に千人ずつ人間を殺そう」と宣言し、それに対抗してイザナギが「それなら私は、一日に千五百人生ませよう」と宣言し返すシーンがあります。女が「殺」／男が「生」を宣言する意外性だけではなくて、「生と死のバランス」と「人類の繁栄」を“算術的”に示す面白さがあって、実に印象的です。

　古代から現代に目を転じてみましょう。

　科学には腕が二本あります。
　片腕にはこんなモットーが貼り付けられています。「私はどんどん人を殺そう。昨日より今日、今日より明日の方がたくさん殺せるように科学は進歩するのだ」
　もう片腕にはこんなモットーが貼り付けられています。「私は人を助けよう。昨日より今日、今日より明日の方がたくさん助けられるように科学は進歩するのだ」

　人類はその両腕のバランスの上に生きています。
