車馬賃

　私が医者になった頃、往診には「車馬賃（車馬代）」がかかりました（ちなみに車馬賃には健康保険は効きません）。私はずっと勤務医で往診は基本的にはやらないところばかりだったので（まったく経験がゼロというわけではありませんが）、ともかくこの「車馬賃」とは無縁でいままで生きてきました。
　「車馬だなんて、時代錯誤なことばだ」と思う方もおられるでしょうが、これはお役所用語のなごりでしょう。かつてお役所で「旅費は、鉄道賃、船賃、航空賃及び車馬賃の四種とし、鉄道旅行には鉄道賃、水路旅行には船賃、鉄道の便なき区間の陸路旅行には車馬賃を支給」とあったのが実社会のあちこち（医学だけではなくて、大会社の出張規程など）でもそのまま使われていたのではないかと私は想像しています。今は基本的に「運賃」「交通費」でしょうけれど、調べてみると今でもこの言葉を使っている病院がありました（「車馬賃　病院」で検索したらGoogleでもYahoo!でも出てきます。病院以外を知りたければ「車馬賃　出張規程」で検索、かな）。
　おっと、1980年代に私が赴任した病院の隣市では、戦前から医師をしている人が馬で往診している、という話を両方の地域を担当しているプロパーさんから聞いたのを思い出しました。これだったら確かに「車馬賃」ですね。車よりはるかにコストがかかりそうですけれど。

　馬と言えば、私が子どもの時、小学校の前を自動車に混じって馬車がたまに走っていたのを覚えています。どこの田舎だ、と言いたくなりますが、一応現在は政令指定都市となって「町」ではなくて「街」のふりをしている地方都市です。趣味の乗馬ではなくてあれは完全に荷運びでした。そういえば家内は同じ時期に別の市でロバのパン屋さんを見ています。実際にはポニーだったようですが。たかだか40〜50年前のことですが、自分が経験していることなのに、まるで別の国の話みたいな気がします。
