外米

　むかしむかしと言っても１５年くらい前、私がコンピュータ通信の世界に足を踏み入れた頃のお話です。日本では、冷夏の影響だったと記憶していますが、米が大不作となり、それまでの「古米・古々米をどうするんじゃあ。もっともっと減反じゃあ、きぃ〜っ！」が一転して「米が足りない〜、大変だ大変だ」となりました。そこで政府がやったのが、米の緊急輸入（それまで「米の輸入」なんて農協を刺激することは、政治的にはタブーとされていたはずでした）。ほとんど忘れられていた「外米」なんてことばが巷では復活しました。ところが無理して輸入した米は「外米」ですから国産米と味や食感が違います。そもそも米の性質に向いた炊き方が違うのですから、そのまま電気釜に放り込んでいつもと同じようにスイッチをいれたら“不味いご飯”となってしまいます。そのために全然売れずに大幅に余ってしまう、という大変もったいないことになりました。わが家でも一度か二度買って「世間で言うほど不味くはないぞ。特にピラフやインド風カレーには合うな」という感想でしたが、それ以後近所のスーパーにはずっと国産米が並んでいたので、そちらをちびちび買っているうちに翌年の新米のシーズンを迎えてしまいましたっけ。そういえば当時は「ブレンド米」といって、政府が強制的に国産米とタイ米をブレンドして「さあ、これを食え」と無理を言っていた記憶も蘇ってきました。いくらなんでもそれは（両者に最善の炊き方ができないのですから）両方のお米に失礼な態度だ、と思いましたっけ。
　今年、新型インフルエンザワクチンが足りなくて「ワクチンが足りない〜、大変だ大変だ」となって、大量に輸入されることになりました。ところが国産のものとは製造法や添加物が違うそうで、かつての外米と同様日本人の“お口”に合うかどうかはわかりません。もしかしたら大量に余ったりして。さすがにワクチンのブレンドや増量大サービスはできないでしょうが、もしそうなったらマスコミが「新型インフルエンザで次々死者が出た。みなワクチンを打っていない人だ」と報道をして「ワクチンを打たなきゃならない気運」を盛り上げるか、何らかの“科学的”理由を発掘して「ワクチン接種回数はやはり２回とする」と厚労省が決定することになるのかな？
　……しかし、ワクチンが不足するのは、ちょうど今年の田植えの時期からわかっていたことですよねえ。
