造化のミス？

　「目が語るもの」で網膜の血管について述べましたが、実はこの“設計”は造化の神様のミスでしょう。ヒトの視神経や動脈は目の後ろからやって来て、まず一点から目の中に入ります。そこで枝分かれして眼球の“内側”で網膜の各部位に配線されています。これで困ることは二つあります。一つは「盲点」。視神経や動脈が眼球内に出入りする「一点」は網膜がありません。したがってそこではものを見ることができません。もう一つ困るのは、網膜の前に血管や神経があるから影になって見づらい……ではなくて、血管が痛んで出血した場合にその血が視野を奪うことが困るのです。これがイカやタコの眼球のように網膜の後ろ（眼球の外側）から配線してあったら、眼底出血で失明、なんてことは無かったはずなのですが（出血しても目の外側ですから、網膜は出血そのものでは痛みません。血液不足（酸素不足）で痛むことはあるでしょうが）。ただ、そのかわりに眼底の血管を観察して病気を発見したり程度を評価する、ということができていますから、これは一長一短といったところでしょうか。（もっともその場合でも人類は別のやり方での医療技術を発展させたとは思いますが）

　もう一つ、神様は配管ミスをしています。気管と食道の配置です。
　人間の首は細いくせに重要な管がたくさん走っています。頸動脈・頚静脈・脊髄・気管・食道（脊髄は管じゃない？　　ふふふ、中心管をお忘れ無く）。さて、首の断面を描いた時、気管と食道のどちらが前にあるか、正確に描けるでしょうか？　　正解は、気管。たとえ解剖を知らなくても、もしも気管切開の人を見たことがあればわかるでしょう。首の前から気管にチューブが入っていますが、もし気管の前に食道があったらそんなに簡単に気管切開ができるわけがありません。
　ところがこれを私は「配管ミス」と呼びます。
　人間の頭を横から見た、と想像してください。鼻から吸った空気は（首で前にある）気管を通って肺に行きます。口から食べたものは（首で気管の後ろにある）食道を通って胃に行きます。つまりのどで空気と食べ物は流れがクロスしているのです（「俺は口で息をするから、クロスしていない」と主張する自由はあります）。
　食べ物を飲み込む時には流れが混乱しないように絶妙の反射運動が行われます。食べ物が喉の奥に送り込まれると同時に、軟口蓋（のどちんこがぶら下がっているところ）がひょいと持ち上がって鼻への上の通路をふさぎ、同時に下の気管の入り口もふさがれて食べ物は食道以外には行き場を失います。ごっくん、めでたしめでたし。ところがこの反射運動が乱れたりこのあたりの筋肉の力がおちたりすると、生じるのが「誤嚥（飲食物が気管に流れ込む）」です。誤嚥は、窒息や肺炎のもとなので、起きたら嬉しくありません。
　つまり、人類は（自分の唾を含む）何かを飲み込むたびに自分の命をかけているのです。
　解決は簡単で、気管を後ろ／食道を前、に配置すればよい。なんなら完全分離にしてしまいましょう。口のものは垂れ流しでもそのまま胃に流れます。気管も誤嚥の恐怖から解放されます。
　ただ、これはこれで問題があります。たとえば鼻づまりで窒息死となってしまいます。会話も鼻声だけで行わなければなりません。これは嬉しくありませんねえ。造化の神様は、なんでもっとエレガントな解決法を思いつかなかったのでしょうねえ。
