　住めば都

　人口数千の小さな町（行政区画はたしかに「町」でしたが、実体はいくつかの「村」のゆるやかな集合体……実際にそこは合併して「町」になる前はいくつかの「村」でした）の小さな病院に勤務している時に私は結婚しました。食料品の買い物は山を西へ二つ超えた隣町の小さなスーパーに、銀行に給料を引き出しに行くには北の隣町へトンネルを抜けて車で行く必要があるところで、町内に信号は２ヶ所（小学校の前と中学校の前）だけという立派なへき地でした。彼女は街育ちなのによく来てくれたものだと感謝しています。
　結婚後数年でこんどは地方の小都市に異動となりました。行政区画は「市」でしたが実体は幾つかの町と村のゆるやかな集合体でした（当時「大阪市とほぼ同じ面積で人口は大阪市の百分の一」なんて言われていました）。で、同僚となった医者たちはほとんどが県庁所在地からの赴任で、その奥様方の不満は「こんな田舎！」。ところが私の奥様はきゃぴきゃぴと「歩いていけるところにスーパーがある！　信号がいくつもある！　街灯がある！　銀行もある！！」　ついでに歯医者もパン屋も本屋も鮨屋もありました（私の場合はたとえ小さくても本屋があることがとっても嬉しかったなあ）。ちなみに当時はコンビニはまだありませんでした（今はあります）。用がなかったので調べていませんがたぶん弁護士もいなかったはずです。
　とにかく奥様方の評価が、同じ場所でも正反対となっているのが実に面白かったのを覚えています。住めば都とは言いますが、どの方向からその“都”にやってきたかもけっこう重要なんですね。
