頭を冷やせ

　地球が温暖化しているとはいえ、やはり冬になると冷えますね。それでも今までは穏やかだったけれど明日からはがくんと冷える、と天気予報で言っていました。
　底冷えがする季節になると、私は昔の経験を思い出します。（個人の特定を避けるためにフィクションで事実が“曲げ”られています、念のため）

　あれは病院の窓の外で粉雪が闇を満たそうと舞っていた夜九時頃のことでした。電話が鳴りました。子供の様子がおかしい、とのことです。とにかくすぐに来てもらいます。
　救急車から、幼稚園児と小学生の兄弟が運びおろされました。
　私は首を傾げました。熱は高いのですが、手足は異常に冷たく唇は紫色です。しかもなぜか半袖半ズボン姿。
　着ているものはともかく、チアノーゼが来る疾患か、ライ症候群か、髄膜炎か、と怖い病名が私の頭の中を駆けめぐります。しかし、兄弟二人揃って？
　カルテを見るとその日に二人ともその病院の小児科にかかっていました。病名は風邪です。しかしそのときには重症感を伺わせる記載はありません。私はまず小児科医に呼び出しの電話をかけました。小児科医が来るまでに、付き添ってきた両親から今日の外来受診後の状況を聞き出します。
　口をぽかんと開けてしまいました。
　両親は「熱があるのなら冷やせばいいだろう」という発想から、子ども部屋の暖房を切り窓を開けて、雪混じりの冷気で薄着にさせた子どもたちの体を「冷やし」ていたのでした。
　ヨーロッパには熱に対して水風呂、という療法があることは承知していましたが、さすがに真冬の冷気で熱のある小児の体を空冷する、という発想は私にはありませんでした。ヴィスコンティ監督の映画「イノセント」で主人公が望まなかった赤ん坊を裸にして冷気に全身を晒して殺すシーンが脳裏をよぎります。
　駆けつけた小児科医に手早く説明して、とにかく二人の体を温める算段をします。
　両親は心外だ、と言います。「先生は頭を冷やせ、と言ったでしょう。だったら体全体を冷やしたらもっと効果的なはずでしょう」小児科医に文句を言っています。
「いや、だから、氷枕とか氷嚢とか頭を冷やすシートとかあるでしょう、それのことです。それに、頭は冷やせ、でも体は温かく、とも言ったでしょう。布団に寝かせて頭を冷やして欲しかったんですけどねえ」
「そんなことは聞いてません！」「先生は冷やせと言ったじゃないか！！」二重唱です。子どもたちはどんな思いでそれを聞いていることでしょう。

　子ども時代、熱にうなされているとき、おでこに乗せられた濡れタオルがそっと交換され新しいタオルがひんやりと気持ちよかったことを私は大人になっても覚えています。薄目を開けたら母親が眠たそうにでも心配そうにこちらを見守っていてくれましたっけ。濡れタオルで体温がどんどん下がるとは思えませんが、そういった親の態度を日々体験することで、子供は親に対する、いや、人という存在に対する信頼感を確立していくのでしょう。
　早く熱を下げようと、子どもをたとえば冷蔵庫に突っ込む方法もありますね。でももし万が一それで病気が治ったとしても、その子は冷蔵庫に感謝しても親には感謝しなくなるかもしれません。

＊そういえば、おでこに貼るシート、あれ、蓄熱にしては容量が小さく見えますし、蒸散にしては水分量が少ないように見えます。実際には何カロリーくらい体から熱を奪えるのでしょう。具体的に熱が何度くらい冷ませるのでしょう。ちゃんと表示されていましたっけ？　あるいはその表示を親はちゃんと読んでいるのかな？
