As Toyota Motors struggles to reassure a jittery public about the safety of some of its vehicles, officials from the auto giant said Monday there's no evidence to support last week's claim by a California man of a runaway Prius on a San Diego highway.

Reports of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles have increased over the course of the past two months.

"Since the recent publicity regarding recalls, claims of unintended acceleration have inexplicably skyrocketed. This is an issue of complex and great importance, but rushing to judgment in the absence of facts and balance does the public a disservice. To say this incident was sensationalized would be an enormous understatement."

Toyota officials urged California authorities to examine whether the March 8th incident happened as reported to police.

The all-important copper industry, which accounts for half of Chile's export revenue, was largely unaffected by the 8.8 magnitude quake as most of the big mines are in the north of the country, 1,500 kilometres from the epicentre.

Even the world's biggest copper company Codelco, which owns El Teniente, the mine closest to the devastation, said it would suffer only a 0.5% drop in annual production as a result.

The two worst affected regions were Bio Bio and Maule, which between them account for 14% of Chilean GDP.

Bio Bio lies at the heart of the local forestry industry while neighbouring Maule is home to some of Chile's finest vineyards. Those two sectors have been hard hit and will take months to recover.

The forestry industry's greatest asset - trees - were shaken but not destroyed, but the pulp and saw mills that employee thousands of people in Bio Bio were damaged.

Chile produces 7% of the world's wood pulp, and forestry accounts for 8% of national exports. Output will be curbed, at least in the short term.

For the wine industry, the quake could hardly have struck at a more poignant time.

Just this weekend, the Colchagua Valley, the most famous wine valley in the country, was due to celebrate its annual grape harvest. Instead, the local vintners are clearing up the mess.

Millions of bottles were smashed on the floors of Chile's wine cellars. Cracked oak barrels and broken storage tanks stand as testament to the power of the quake, which destroyed around 12.5% of this year's national wine production at a cost of $250 million (£165m).

Despite the devastation it caused, last Saturday's Chilean earthquake won't have a serious long-term impact on the economy, and it might even boost growth this year by fueling a boom in the construction industry.

Analysts and the government say first half gross domestic product (GDP) will undoubtedly suffer, as those regions worst hit by the quake grapple with energy supply failures and temporary transport problems.

But after that, the economy should bounce back rapidly.

"Activity will drop for one or two quarters," said Alberto Ramos, senior emerging markets economist at Goldman Sachs in New York.

"Then we're likely to see a very quick rebound as things normalize and as the reconstruction effort gives an extra kick to GDP."

Investment bank JP Morgan even went so far as to upgrade its growth forecasts for Chile in response to the earthquake.

It said the construction boom would push annual expansion this year and next to 5.5%, an improvement on its previous forecast of 5.0%.

「オイルの神秘」

これはね。モロッコで売られているアルガンオイルというバージンオイルよ。。

何に使うの？

サラダのドレッシングとかに。

いい臭いね。

ほかにもお肉とか魚にも。そのままパンにつけたり。

このオイルは、年中雨が降らないモロッコの南西特有のアルガニアという学名の「アルガン」の木の実から抽出される。アルガンの木は干ばつや半砂漠の土でも約200年生きる。近年、絶滅の危機に瀕して、絶滅危惧種とされユネスコの保護下にある。

このオイルは年間の生産量が少なく世界で最も希少なオイルである。1リットルのオイルを作るのに、一つの木になる実を全部使う。

このオイルはビタミンEと必須脂肪酸が多く、顔のマッサージや化粧クリームの材料にも使われている。

2007年の例で言うと、アイルランドの23歳の男性が、顔や頭皮など体の85%が乾癬にかかっていたが、アルガンオイルを試したところ、数時間で痒みが消え、4週間後には、頭皮は完全にきれいに治り、病変は最終的に40％まで減少し、痒みもないという。

他にも、蕁麻疹の24歳の女性の例がある。アルガンオイルは同じように効果があった。彼女は、辛い人生が変わったと言う。。。

― Chat rich with cultural interest ―

Arteriosclerosis caused by a long-term life style could be somewhat reversible　by changing diet, but the final episode is inevitable.

You know what to expect in the long run, though, changing diet should not be a piece of cake.  Is there little that can be done there?

This sort of thing will give you something to chat away after you’ve finished a dinner of steak:…we’re not talking the story like the end of the world here anyway.

We can taste some chat rich of cultural interest for a change of air.

　長い間の生活習慣による動脈硬化は、食事を変えることで、多少は元に戻っても、最後の結末を避けることはできません。

でも、最後にどういう結果になるか分かっていても、食事を変えるのはたやすいことじゃないかも。どーしようもないかしら？

この手の話題は、ステーキのディナーを食べた後の楽しいおしゃべりのネタになるかも。。。この世の終わりみたいな話をしているわけでもないしー。

Clogged arteries　「詰まった血管」

Lead researcher Iris Shai said: "It was very interesting to see that these very different diets had a similar effect.

"Some people suggest that low-carbohydrate diets are more likely to clog arteries, but we did not see that."

The research paper suggested the link could be related to falling blood pressure caused by the change in diet.

The findings were welcomed by UK experts.

Dr Charles Knight, secretary of the British Cardiovascular Society and a consultant cardiologist, said although the study was "relatively small" and was not able to follow through to find out how many people eventually had heart attacks or strokes, the results were nevertheless "very interesting".

He pointed out that the study adds weight to the growing body of research that suggests that atherosclerosis is a modifiable disease.

Ten to 15 years ago, it was thought that fatty build-up in the arteries was irreversible, but since then drugs trials have shown that it is possible for fatty deposits to be cut.

"It sends an effective message from a public health perspective."

"This study shows you can do something to reduce plaque build-up, even without pills," Dr Knight said.

However, he warned that the scale of reduction in the volume of artery walls was relatively small and that changing diet, although helpful, was "no magic bullet".

Diet 'can help blocked arteries'

Three diets - Mediterranean, low-fat and low-carbohydrate - are equally effective in helping reverse blocked arteries, say Israeli researchers.

The study of 140 people, reported in the journal Circulation, found diet could reduce the fatty build up in arteries.

The Ben-Gurion University team found by the end of the two-year study the arterial wall was cut by 5%.

Experts said the study was interesting, but diet was not a "magic bullet".

Atherosclerosis is a progressive condition in which the arteries thicken with fatty deposits, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The authors of this Israeli study, which was carried out in collaboration with researchers in the US, Canada and Germany, set out to see if this natural part of ageing can be reversed through diet.

Volunteers followed one of three diets - a low-fat diet, a low-carbohydrate diet or a Mediterranean diet, which is based on eating lots of fruit and vegetables, and using olive oil as the main source of fat.

They were asked to stick to the diet for two years, and record what they ate in food diaries.

The study was carried out among overweight volunteers, mostly men, who were aged 40 to 65.

Using three-dimensional imaging, the researchers measured the volume of the wall of the carotid artery, the large artery in the neck which takes blood up to the brain. This was done at the start of the study and again after two years.

The national Asahi newspaper said in an editorial that Toyoda's performance would be a "crucial test" for his company — and perhaps for Japan's reputation among consumers globally.

His testimony "not only determines Toyota's fate, but may affect all Japanese companies and consumer confidence in their products," it said. "President Toyoda has a heavy load on his shoulders."

Morning TV shows ran clips of a U.S. congressional panel grilling James Lentz, president of Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc., Tuesday in Washington — while most Japanese were asleep.

But much more TV time in Japan Wednesday was devoted to women's figure skating at the Vancouver Olympics, an event in which Japan has a couple of medal contenders.

Toyota's safety woes hadn't generated as much public concern in Japan because the bulk of the cars recalled — mostly over faulty gas pedals and floor mats — are in the U.S. and elsewhere. The only recall in Japan has been for the antilock braking system in the Prius gas-electric hybrid.

But the Transport Ministry said Wednesday it is looking into 38 consumer complaints about sudden acceleration in Japan involving Toyota vehicles filed from 2007 through 2009.

Transport Ministry official Kazumi Furukawa said the investigation will include other automakers, totaling 134 cases. Toyota vehicles comprise 28 percent of the complaints, about the same as their Japanese market share, he said.

Verdict first, trial after — but it does not stop there. Toyota is now also under investigation by Securities and Exchange Commission and United States attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York.

However, as even the Detroit News concedes, uncontrolled acceleration claims have a chequered history:

　Experts say the number of fatalities linked to reports of uncontrolled acceleration of Toyota vehicles — 15 when the first recall was announced, and now 34 — isn’t a big number for a company that sells close to 2 million cars and trucks a year in the United States.

Most independent auto experts and investigators say unintended acceleration is most often caused by driver error; the driver, in a moment of panic, or in an unfamiliar vehicle, may accidentally step on the wrong pedal.

Thirty years ago, Audi faced damaging complaints that its cars were prone to unintended acceleration — allegations that U.S. safety regulators now say were never proven.

Similar complaints in the late 1990s against Chrysler Corp.’s Jeep Grand Cherokee turned up no defect, said Vines, who was then working for Chrysler. The problem was either a floor mat trapping the gas pedal, or people stepping on the gas, he said.

But Toyota is increasingly facing allegations from plaintiffs’ attorneys that electronic interference with the systems in the vehicle may be causing the acceleration to go haywire.

They point to the automaker’s adoption, starting about 10 years ago, of electronic throttle control, in which the driver stepping on the gas is actually sending an electronic signal to the throttle.

Indeed, the biggest proponent of this unproven theory is Sean Kane, president of Massachusetts-based Safety Research & Strategies Inc., who will be testifying before the House on Wednesday:

Two weeks ago, his firm released a 51-page report that alleged at least 2,262 Toyota and Lexus owners have reported sudden acceleration that resulted in 815 crashes, 341 injuries and 19 deaths since 1999. About half of the complaints involved vehicles not included in any current Toyota recalls, according to the report.

Toyota said it is unable to confirm Mr. Kane’s numbers and has hired its own study firm.

Mr. Kane said his latest report wasn’t produced as a direct result of funding from a particular lawsuit against Toyota. Yet lawyers often pay him a consulting fee to review individual crashes, listen to depositions, advise lawyers on questions and strategies, and produce analyses of crash trends using National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data. He does not receive a bonus or a percentage of any settlement in such cases, he said.

In the report released last week, Mr. Kane thanked a group of lawyers who have pending cases against Toyota for sponsoring some of his research into unintended acceleration in Toyotas.

Three of those lawyers—Terrence McCartney of New York; Donald Slavik of Milwaukee, Wis.; and R. Graham Esdale Jr. of Montgomery, Ala.—said Mr. Kane has helped on cases, including litigation against Toyota.

GETCHA BOOTS ON

One of the organizing principles of Toyota's industrial ideology is that you have to "genchi genbutsu" a problem. In Japanese that means you have to go to the place, to touch the thing itself. You have to meet the customer, lift the hood, get your hands dirty. Walk, don't talk, Toyota instructs its workers.

After three months of busy and sometimes frustrated exchanges with Toyota's U.S. staff on safety issues, the U.S. Department of Transportation decided last December to try a very Toyota tactic戦略 to get the automaker's attention.
