Comparison of Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F versus sulfasalazine in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: a randomized trial. Ann Intern Med. 2009 151(4):229-40.
Lipsky PE らは121例の活動性RAを2群に分け、Tripterygium wilfordii hook F（TwHF; 雷公藤 (thunder god vine) 別名 タイワンクロヅル）の根から抽出した生薬、またはアザルフィジン（2g/日）を投与し、24週後に各投与群の有効性を比較した。
その結果、TwHF の24週後のACR20反応率は65%と、アザルフィジンの反応率（32.8%）より有意に優れていた。また、TwHF の効果発現は早かった。一方、副作用ではTwHF群でコレステロール値が有意に上昇していた他には両群に差はなかった。課題は小規模な研究であること、脱落率が高かったこと、有効成分（diterpenoid metabolites）の詳細（triptolide and tripdiolide？）が不明な点などである。
