エドモンド バークの言葉

・イギリスの英語雑誌をみていると，結構ジョークがあっておもしろいですね．私の英語の素養がないので，本当は，いっぱい面白いことが書かれているのでしょうが，気がつかずに読みすごしていると思います．（残念）

・例えば，イギリスの社会福祉政策のスローガンであった有名な，「ゆりかごから墓場まで」と言う言葉．日本語にしてしまえば，面白くも何ともないですが，英語では”from the cradle to the grave”とちゃんと韻を踏んでいます．もう一つの言い方が，from womb to tombとこちらも韻を踏んでいておもしろですね．

・それは，さておき，以前Lancetのビコに関する記事を書きましたが，それに関連したletterがあります.  BMJ 2006;332:854-855(8 April)にGuantanamo: a call for action Good men need to do somethingというものがありました．これは，グワンタナモ基地でハンガーストライキを行った「囚人」に医師が無理矢理経管栄養を行った問題に関しての意見で，American Medical Associationというった医師の団体がちゃんと調査すべきだという意見を書いたものです．表題のGood men need to do somethingは，イギリスの政治家・思想家のEdmund Burkeの次の言葉に引っ掛けてあるんですね．All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing．（悪が栄えるために必要なことは，善良な人々が何もしないことである．：私のつたない訳です．もし間違っていたらご指摘下さい）

・この言葉，とても大事なことだと思います．
