ついに、ドク虎も、「医療亡国論」の某お役人に洗脳されてしまったのか・・・
ご安心ください。まだそこまで愚かではありませぬ。
「南江堂 英語抄録・口頭発表・論文作成虎の巻」を、失礼かと思いつつも、専門分野こそ違いますが、とある尊敬する大先輩に献本しました。
意外にも、こちらが恥ずかしくなるほどほめていただきました。
「若いころに苦労して論文を投稿したことを思い出しました。50年前にこういう本が欲しかった。」といっていただきました。
著者冥利につきるとはこういうことでしょう。こちらこそ元気をいただきました。ありがたいことです。
パソコンやワープロのない時代に英文ペーパーを書く苦労は察するに余りあります。図書館に足を運んで膨大なIndex Medicusを引き、書いては直し、直してはまた直され、まるで賽の河原です。
ところで、その大先輩に、｢若さ｣についてのある英文を教えていただきました。
Samuel Ullmanによる一文です。
終戦直後、日本の指導者層の人たちはこの文章を胸にがんばったそうです。
YOUTH

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a body of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.
お時間のない方のために、ひとことでいうと、若さというのは必ずしも暦年齢に一致しないということです。
60歳の若者もいれば、20歳の老人もいる。年をとるのは、情熱を失うからだ。いつも心のアンテナを張って、美、希望、喜び、勇気、力を、人々から、そして天から受け取っていれば、たとえしわになり、ひざが硬くなったとしても80歳でも元気で若死にできるというものです。
これを教えていただいて、ドク虎は勇気付けられました。ご同輩の方々、何かと厳しいご時勢ですが、少しは元気がでましたでしょうか。
